Question
I used to have a parakeet a year ago but unfortunately it got sick and died. I just got a new one a few weeks ago and i still have the previous materials such as cuttlebone and millet sprays. Is it ok for me to re-use these materials? Thank you very much for your help!

Answer
Hi, Jessica.  Thanks for posting!

These items are inexpensive so I wouldn't use them with your new bird since they've been around for a year.  The cuttlebone might be OK if you've kept it wrapped up or in a baggie, but I wouldn't take a chance with the spray millet...you don't know what bugs might have gotten into it or moisture that could have developed mold, etc.  I'd rather be safe than sorry!

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
