Birds--General/I think my Cockateil is sick

Question
My bird has black spots on the bottom of his beak and they haven't been there ever. Is this natural or not? And if not what do you think my cockateil has?

Answer
Hi, Morgan.

I don't think I've ever seen/read/heard anything like you describe.  Can you take a magnifying glass and look at these black spots closely and see if you can determine what they might be?  Is the cage your bird is in a black cage?  If so, could your bird be chewing the paint on the cage wire?  Any toys or dishes in the cage that are black?  You can call an avian veterinarian's office and ask the vet technician if they can tell you what this might be.  I'm not an avian vet and perhaps this could be diet-related, vitamin/mineral deficiency or indicative of a medical condition I'm not aware of.

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
