Birds--General/weaning a Jenday Conure

Question
Greetings! We have an 3 and a half month old jenday conure. We have had it for 2 weeks. It is very friendly and has been a nice addition to our family. Our Vet gave our bird a clean bill of health, but thought it should have been weaned prior to coming into our care. We have started the weaning process with some success. Every thing I've read says that we are behind. Will weaning this bird this late cause any problems? Is there anything special that we should to to help the bird and.or speed up the process? Thanks,

Amy

Answer
Hi, Patrick and Amy.  Thanks for posting!

While this bird should have been completely weaned at about 8 weeks of age, there's no set time limit for weaning to occur.  Thus, no need to speed up the process.  If you want a tame bird, then handfeeding it this long will only ensure a tame bird!

I believe in abundance weaning.  This means the bird should have as much variety of human food as will allow.  Wean to a variety of foods...not seed.  Seed should be used as an occasional treat or a reward for positive behavior.  Visit my website for more information on diet, etc.:

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
