Birth Control/Depo shot

Question
Hey.  I have been getting the depo shot for about three of four years now.  I
noticed I can go up to six months after the shot and maybe even longer and
I don't get pregnant.  I'm kind of worried because in about a year I'll be trying
for a baby.  How long does the effectivness of the depo shot last?

Thank you

Answer
Hi Jessica,

The effectiveness of the shot lasts for 3 months. However, once you stop the shot it can take several months for your body to adjust to its pre-shot cycle. On average, it can take 9-10 months for ovulation to return and to become pregnant after the last shot. For some women, this time period can be shorter and for some it can be longer. More than 90% of women who are trying to become pregnant after the shot do so within 2 years after the last shot. Have you already stopped receiving the shot? If your last shot was more than 3 months ago, then your body has started to adjust to being off the shot.

I hope this helps. If you have further questions, let me know.
