Birth Control/Mirena IUD

Question
I have had Mirena for 5-6 months. I recently lifted heavy boxes and moved some furniture. The next evening I was having what felt like cramps. Then my abdomen was very tender over the whole weekend and bloated. There is no blood or spotting. I can feel the strings. I have not had intercourse. Can it move?

Answer
Hi Laura,

There is a small chance that the IUD can move or fall out. This is more likely in younger women who have not had children, but it is still rare. If you can feel the string than that is a good sign. It sounds like you may have pulled a muscle in your abdomen due to the move and are experiencing cramps from that, not the IUD. I recommend that you give your doctor a call to check in if you are concerned about the IUD or if the cramps do not go away within a week.

I hope this helps. If you have further questions let me know.
