Birth Control/Kelnor Birth Control
Expert: Mia - 11/17/2008
QuestionHi my name is Casey and I am 22 years old. I have been on birth control since I was 17 and have never had a problem with weight gain. About 6 months ago the pharmacist changed my prescription from Zovia to Kelnor and I have gained about 8 lbs since then. He said it basically was the same thing but cheaper. I have noticed the weight in my hips and upper thighs. I have not changed eating habits so the only thing I can think of is the birth control. Could this be true?? Also, if I change pills can I lose the lbs. I have gained? Thanks! Casey
AnswerHi Casey,
It is possible to gain a bit of weight on the pill due to water retention caused by the hormones. This will be especially noticeable in your breasts, hips, or thighs. However, this most often will go away after being on the pill for a few months. It is also possible that you are gaining weight as a natural part of growing older. Many women in their 20s and 30s will gain weight due to changes in metabolism and hormones. So changing brands may help, but also may not.
If your diet and exercise has not changed, I suggest trying to lower your salt intake a bit to see if that helps. If you still notice a weight gain, then give your doctor a call to discuss a possible brand switch. A good pill to try is one with a lower dose of estrogen than what you have now.
I hope this helps. If you have further questions, let me know.
