Question

I took the depo shot 5 years ago.  I only had two shots and didn't like the side
effects so I got off of it.  Ever since I have had VERY heavy periods that last
anywhere from 1 to 6 months.  I have even had to have transfusions a couple of
times.  Could this be a side effect of the shot?  My doctor has done all sorts
of tests and has found nothing wrong and is now talking about doing a partial
hysterectomy but I am only 26 years old and would like to still have children.

Answer
Hi Natasha,
I don't think your bleeding problems now are related to the depo shot 5 years ago.  There are a number of other things that could be causing them.  I think you need a thorough evaluation and possibly a second opinion.  It would be unusual that your problem couldn't be resolved without a partial hysterectomy.
