Birth Control/periods after mirena removal

Question
I had a mirena fitted after the birth of my youngest daughter who is now almost 3 which I then had removed about 5 weeks ago as we want to have another baby.  I have no idea when my period would be due as I had no bleeding with the mirena fitted and was wondering how long it should take for my cycle to get back to normal or whether  i could already be pregnant.  Thanks

Answer
Hi Sharon,

The Mirena IUD contains hormones which can prevent ovulation. It could take your cycles 1-3 months to return to normal after the IUD is removed. However, while Mirena IUD can stop ovulation for some women this is not the primary way it works. You may have ovulated while on the IUD and are ovulating now. So yes, it is possible that you may already be pregnant. I recommend taking a home pregnancy test. If it is negative, then your body may not have returned to its regular cycle. If, after 3 months, you do not get a period and you are not pregnant, give your doctor a call.

I hope this helps. If you have further questions let me know.
