Question
I have been on birth control since i was almost 18! I'm 21 now and lost health insurance so I quit taking it when I ran out and figured my body could us the break. But I had no period for 2 1/2 or 3 monthes and now i have been on a period for 9 days now with a heavy or moderate consistent flow! When will it stop?

Answer
Connie,

Everyone's body is different, and people react very differently in terms of birth control. It is normal for your body to go through a stage of adjustment (such as having no period, or having a heavy long-lasting period) when beginning a new birth control method or right after ending one, such as you did. Usually this period of adjustment shouldn't last longer than 3 months, so I would recommend that if your period lasts 2 weeks or more, then you should check with a physician. As for not having health insurance to cover your birth control, are you aware that Planned Parenthood can usually provide women with low cost birth control that is based on your income? There is also a form of insurance called Plan First that is specifically meant to pay for birth control for women who don't have any other form of insurance. Thanks for the question, and I hope I helped!
