Birth Control/effectiveness

Question
I want to try and lose a few pounds and start taking green tea supplements. Would green tea supplements change the effectiveness of my birth control?

Answer
Dear Erika,

I found two websites (see below) that say it may decrease the effectiveness of your birth control. However, I would consult your pharmacist who dispensed the pills to you.  Pharmacists are an excellent source of information, sometimes they know more than doctors about the effects of medications.

1.  "I have been taking the weight smart vitamin for 4 weeks and have been happy with the results of the pill until recently. About six days ago I started spotting (8 days before my period was due to start) I have been quite concerned about the bleeding and have inquired about it to my local drug centre. However, there is little information on this topic and the only explanation I have received is that the green tea in the vitamin is interacting with the birth control pill I am on and is likely diminishing the effectiveness of my contraceptive."
