Birth Control/iud removal

QuestionQUESTION: Hi,
I just had my iud taken out 1 week ago and have had unprotected sex 3 times sice. Is it possible to get pregnant asap?
Thanks Jess
ANSWER: Hi Jess,
Yes it is possible to become pregnant soon after removal of the IUD. A woman can still ovulate while on an IUD, it's primary way of preventing pregnancy is by blocking sperm from reaching an egg. The Mirena IUD contains hormones that could prevent ovulation, but this will not necessarily happen each month. When do you expect your next period? Depending on where you are in your cycle, it is possible you ovulated this week.
I am not sure from your email if are hoping for a pregnancy or not. If you do not want to become pregnant, I recommend that you call your doctor to discuss this further. If you had sex within the last 72 hours, Plan B can be used to prevent pregnancy. In the future, I recommend using condoms.
I hope this has helped. If you have further questions let me know.

QUESTION: Thank you for your response..
I am ttc... but when i had my iud i did not get my period does this change anything? today i have been having cramps and my boobs are sore i know its to early for pregger symptoms but i am really hopeing its not my period..i pray its not.
AnswerHi Jess,
Were you using the Mirena IUD? Not having a period is common on this IUD because it causes a thinning of the lining in the uterus. Women can and do still ovulate on this IUD. Your symptoms are not necessarily from getting your period. They could also be a result of the IUD removal or your body adjusting back to its regular hormonal cycle. It is really hard to say because all women are different.
I wish you the best of luck!
I hope this has helped. If you have further questions let me know.
