Question
Please help any information will be helpful as I do not
have insurance! I am currently 24, with one child (age 4).
Starting Jan 2007 until October 2007 I did not have a
period. (NO period, NO spotting...NOTHING). During this
time my doctor (I was in the Navy) said he believed it was
stress although no testing was done. From November 2007 -
November 2008 I began having periods which lasted 2-4 days
and were so light I would wear a panty liner. My periods
were VERY unpredictable. Also during this time I steadily
gained weight.

Beginning June 2008 I was taking Ortho Tricyclin (low). My
periods did not change. However, in December 2008 about 4
days after my period I began bleeding (VERY dark brown) for
approx. 3 weeks.

My concerns are that I have gained over 30 lbs in the past
9-10 months. I know this may not be relevant but I have
acne (mild) but I have never had it before.

Answer
You may have something called polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).  It's a condition associated with not ovulating, irregular periods, overweight, acne, sometimes increased facial hair.  It is treated by exercise and weight loss, birth control pills, and sometimes other medication.  The fact that you went for a long time without a period is a sign that you were not ovulating during that time.  If you are still taking the pill, the dark bleeding is unusual but probably nothing to be worried about.  I would start a regular exercise program, try to lose weight, and see your doctor for further evaluation and treatment.  Good luck.
