Question

Answer
Hi Leann,

If today was the first day of your period, or you are within 5 days of the start of your period then you are protected immediately. If it is any other time during the month then you should use a back-up method for the first 7 days on the pill. I suggest you consider taking the emergency contraception called Plan B. It is a high dose of birth control that can be taken within 5 days of unprotected sex (it is most effective if you take it during the first 72 hours). If you are 18 or over you can get it without a prescription form your local pharmacy. You may want to give your doctor a call to check first, or discuss this with the pharmacist. Both will have had experience with this before.

I hope this helps. If you have further questions let me know.
