Birth Control - Birth Control Pill

Question
My doctor has just prescribed to me Yasmin birth control. In the past when I was on birth control (I've had 2 babies in between) I always knew that it prevented pregnancy by 1)preventing ovulation, and 2) by changing the mucous so sperm could not penetrate an egg even if one by chance was released. However, when I read the info pack on Yasmin from the pharmacy it said it also worked a third way by preventing a fertilized egg from being able to implant. It said "If an embryo/unborn baby does not attach it cannot survive." I had always understood that if by chance an egg was fertilized the pill would not prevent that embryo from growing. So this third point was new to me, and bothered me. The pharmacist confirmed to me that all pills work this way. But I have also read that a lower dose estrogen pill, has a higher chance of allowing an egg to escape. So my question is would a higher estrogen pill be more efficient at preventing ovulation in the first place? And if so, which pill would be the best to guarantee that an egg would not escape? Thank you so much.

Answer
Hi Jen,

Yes, this is something that I have discovered in recent years. I, too, was on the pill for many years and didn't know about this aspect of the birth control pill. Because I found out this new information, I don't use or don't recommend the birth control pill at all anymore. I wouldn't take a chance on using even a lower dose pill but that decision is up to you. I would recommend a non-hormonal kind of birth control method instead. Please email me at DCHERYL51@yahoo.com and we can talk more that way. Hope to hear from you soon!
