Birth Control - Depo

Question
Hi Diane,

I've been on Depo Provera for almost three years now. I really love this form of BC because I no longer have periods. I haven't had a cycle in about two years and never get cramps, whereas I used to get extreme pains and have periods that were a week+ long. I have tried pills in the past but found it difficult to remember to take them consistantly.

I'm now hearing negative reports on the shot. I have heard that it leads to osteoporosis, can make you infertile, and puts you at a higher risk of getting breast cancer. I've also heard that you are not supposed to take it for longer than two years.

My doctor did not seem too concerned about the above, stating that most forms of BC have similar risks, and told me it was my choice if I wanted to continue depo or not. He did not have a strong opinion about the "2 year rule."

I guess my questions for you are - Exactly how worried should I be about the risks? Should I consider ending my shots and seeking another form of BC? Should I be taking a calcium supplement to help counteract the risk of bone loss?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Answer
Jamie,

In my opinion, too many doctors are not concerned about problems with hormonal birth control. I have done research for years now and I can't understand this. I don't recommend any kind of hormonal birth control method because of risks and long-term and short-term side effects. So it's up to you but I would not be on depo myself. Please email me at DCHERYL51@yahoo.com and we can talk more by email. Put ALLEXPERTS in the subject line of the email and remind me of your question and the date.

Thanks.
Diane Cheryl
