Birth Control - birth control/hirsutism/superficial blood clott

Expert: Diane Cheryl - 6/16/2009

Question
I'm 24 with PCOS with a really bad case of hirsutism it affects every area of my life.  When I was 19 I took Dianette and it really helped, then when I was 20 i got a superficial blood clott which went away with a little cream and sock. At the time i was frightened and came off the pill getting back the hair.. Now I'm 24 and have a boyfriend I'm finding it hard to hide thick coarse hair on my face and i want contraception.  I've tried lazer but it doesn't work on my complexion, metformin, vaniqa and have recently got a prescription for spironolactone but read up and don't like the side-affects.
I want contraception as well as less hair- I want to go back on the pill- what do you think? Do you think I could take the pill and as well as something to reduce the risk of getting a clot in the future. I'm pretty healthy, don't smoke and theres just a little history in my grandfathers side with blood clots...

Answer
Hi Anon,

Thanks for your question. I would not be able to advise you to go back on the pill. There are many risks and side effects (long-term and short-term).

Is your thick hair really that much of a problem? I am sorry to hear of your concerns. Does your boyfriend like you the way you are? If so, you are fortunate.

I would get advice from more than one doctor in order to get other opinions and not just one. Good luck and let me know what happens.

Sincerely,
Diane Cheryl
