Birth Control - missed 1st shot in 5 years & had unprotected sex 3 days later

Expert: Diane Cheryl - 6/25/2009

Question
HI,
i have been on depo for the last 5 years (since my first child was born) and recently missed my first shot which should have been on June 18, 2009.  On June 21 i had unprotected sex.  Just curious of my chance of getting pregnant because of this. Also, questioning the safety of being on depo for so long.  I plan on getting my shot a.s.a.p., but i would love to have more kids in like 5 years. am i effecting those chances?

Answer
Kristianne,

I don't know if you have already had a new shot but if not, I would not recommend for you to do that. I can talk to you more about that on email if you want to email me at DCHERYL51@yahoo.com and put ALLEXPERTS in the subject line.

I don't believe the possibility of pregnancy is too great with just being 3 days late on the shot. But then, I can't guarantee that for sure. There is no method of birth control that is 100% safe in preventing pregnancy. If you want more kids, I would not advise hormonal birth control methods.

So please update me by emailing me at DCHERYL51@yahoo.com and hope to hear from you soon.

Sincerely,
Diane Cheryl
