Birth Control - birth control pill and diarrhea

Expert: Diana Archer - 7/3/2009

Question
  Hello,
I take my pill everyday at 10PM. Last night at around 11:45PM I had diarrhea.  I heard that if you have diarrhea within 2 hours of taking your pill you should use back-up.  I will definitely do that but could I get pregnant?  Do I have to take another pill?  Is it considered missed?

Thank you!

Answer
Hey Lauren,

How severe was the diarrhea? I think that you should use definitly use back up to be safe. Pregnancy is possible, but two hours later is a pretty fair ammount of time for the pill to be digested, but its best to be safe, right? take your next pill at the normal time next time, and just use precautions for the next seven days (known as the 7 day rule) such as condoms.

Diana
