Question
I am a 20 year old who has had a history of irregular periods about 4 years. I have been to a doctor regarding this who put me on birth control pills for a few months with my periods regulating. However, they are irregular again. I am not sexually active and have no problems. However, should I be concerned about the irregular periods or continue taking birth control pills?

Answer
Hi Patricia,
I would keep taking the birth control pills.  They will keep your periods normal and prevent too much buildup of the uterine lining and prevent prolonged bleeding.  If you are overweight or underweight, I would try to get at a normal weight, as that helps to have regular periods.  When you want to get pregnant, if your periods are still irregular there are medications that can help you to ovulate.  Best wishes.
