Birth Control/contraceptive pill

Question
I have been taking the pill almost continuously since I was 16 (as a contaceptive AND to control extremely heavy periods). In my late teens I was diagnosed with PCOS and started taking Dianette to combat the symptoms. A few years ago I tried Yasmin for a few months - it didn't suit me and I changed back to Dianette.
I am almost 34 now and in the last year have experienced migraines with aura for the first time (although there is a family history). I have also suffered from depression (self diagnosed) for the first time and on and off nausea (which I've just read can also be a related symptom). Having discussed these symptoms with my doctor, she recommended switching to Qlaira and prescribed it for me. I've read the guidelines and see that it is not recommended for anyone suffering from migraine with aura.
Dianette has always worked well enough - when I did have a break I felt better and more like myself somehow but it has suited me to be on the pill as a form of contraceptive too. Now I don't know what to do for the best - I'm concerned about my health, especially getting older, I'm in a relationship but have a career and am and not sure if now is a good time to think about pregnancy (I'm not typically broody but have become quite preoccupied with thinking about whether or not to have a family). Part of me is also concerned that this I might not be able to become pregnant. I also don't want the PCOS and its symptoms to come back if I do stop taking the pill and consider alternatives.
I do not feel that my doctor has the time to discuss either the issues with the pill or family planning (given my age and circumstance :0) and would appreciate some advice. Thank you!

Answer
Dear Kirsty,

I hate when a person feels like they can't talk to their doctor at length!

I'm not a physician but in my opinion, you might want to try going off the pill and see what happens. But again, I'm not a medical professional. I worry when someone takes the pill (any brand) for so long a time. I took birth control pills for 10 years and then discontinued.

I really can't tell you what to do so I hope you can weigh the pros and cons. Maybe you could try setting up a time to talk to your doctor. I realize some women when they reach an older age do worry about if they will be able to have a child so I completely understand your feelings.
