Question
I have been on lo loestrin fe birth control for a month and a half now. The first month, I had two periods, and now, I'm a week late for my period. I have had unprotected sex. Also, I took a pregnancy test, which was negative. Is it normal to miss a period while on lo loestrin fe birth control? Or for that matter, on any birth control? I'm kind of nervous that I might be pregnant since I have missed my period.

Answer
Dear Ashlyn,

Yes, the birth control pill can cause abnormal periods. There are hormones in the pills, which is why I don't recommend them or any kind of hormonal birth control method. There are risks and side effects that can occur. So that is one possibility. The other possibility is that you are pregnant but it hasn't shown up on a test yet. Why not go to a pregnancy resource center and get a free test done there? You can find a center close to you by going to http://www.optionline.org or call 1-800-395-HELP. Let me know what happens. You can email me at CHERYL51@aol.com so we can talk more.
