Birth Control/extensive bleeding with IUD

Question
I've had the copper IUD for 5 months now.  Aside from somewhat heavier periods, I have had no trouble or pain.  This last period has lasted for over 10 days now.  I keep thinking it has ended, but then more small blood clots appear.  It also seems that I have been bleeding more during sex.  There is no pain or discomfort, but I am wondering how serious this is.

Answer
Since you've been bleeding for 10 days, I would recommend that you see your doctor for evaluation.  Since you haven't had a problem until now, I suspect that the prolonged bleeding is from something other than the IUD.  It may be from hormonal changes, in which case, some progesterone pills will clear it up.  If there is any chance of an STD, that also can cause abnormal bleeding.  If the IUD has gotten out of position, that might be the cause.  Your doctor can figure it out by an exam, perhaps an ultrasound, and perhaps STD testing.
