Birth Control/Birth control after an abortion
Expert: Norman Solberg - 8/7/2011
QuestionOk, I had an abortion close to the end of May of this year. I started taking my birth control that they provided immediately that sunday. I have been taking that same birth control now strait for the past couple of months and have not had any sex at all.
My problem that i seem to be experiencing is that my period is not starting the same day as my pills and is actually starting a week before and lasting longer than 7 days. And when I am suppose to start my period is comes and only lasts a few days. Now it is a different BC than i normally take. I am taking Loestrin Fe and I am used to taking Yaz.
My boyfriend comes home in a few days and like I said I haven't had sex in over 2 months so would it be alright to have sex even though my periods aren't normal yet. How long should i wait to have sex with my boyfriend after my period is done. We have been together for almost 2 years now and we don't exactly like to use condoms but would it be a good idea this time?
I hope you understand what I am asking and if you have any help for me!! I am stressing everything will go bad again. :(
AnswerIrregular bleeding can sometimes occur in the first 2-3 months of taking the pill. However, the pill is still protecting you from pregnancy, so as long as you take it correctly you don't need to use condoms. The other possibility is that the irregular bleeding is related to the abortion. If you're still having irregular bleeding after taking the pill for 3 packs, I would see your doctor to check it out. You may just need a switch to a different pill.
