Birth Control/Ortho Tri-Cyclen

QuestionHi Drea,
I've been taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen for about a year now. It's very convenient, and I have no trouble remembering to take a pill every day. However, I've noticed that I've been having on-again/off-again stomach problems ever since I began this taking this pill. I stopped taking it for a month to see what would happen, and I noticed a dramatic boost in my mood, and the stomach problems also disappeared. (My mother has Crohn's disease, and she related that these pills had the same effect on her right before she was diagnosed). As soon as I began taking them again this month, my mood plummeted and my stomach problems returned.
I have an appointment with my doctor in a few weeks to discuss this, but I would like to be as prepared as possible to discuss my options. Is there any evidence that this medicine causes gastrointestinal problems? Would a lower dose curtail the mood changes? (I previously took Nordette and had no problems, but I'm not sure how the hormones in that pill compare to Ortho). Anyhoo, as I said before, I love the convenience of a pill, but I was wondering if you thought another brand or dosage might help with my side effects. Thanks!
AnswerHi Kimberly,
There is no reported side effects as far as gastrointestinal problems are concerned, but it certainly could be a contributing factor. And the mood changes are very likley related to the pill use. Switching brands, or trying a lower dose could definitley help you with the side effects, although it may take your body a little while to adjust, so be patient waiting for the results.
Good Luck to you and Thanks,
Drea Jean
