I AM a medical doctor, an ob/gyn and teach at a major medical school and find you information erroneous and misleading. Birth control pills work by preventing ovulation and thickening the cervical mucus but this is temporary.. only while you take the pill. It does not cause "chemical abortions" or cause inflammation of the lining ... it thins the lining and therefore you have lighter periods.
I could go over the side effects you mention one by one but would run out of time as they are incorrect. Here are a few: they prevent ectopic pregnancy, do not cause birth defects if taken accidently while pregnant, do not cause infertility but might in fact protect you from becoming infertile. and you do not mention the non contraceptive benefits of pills: marked reduction in uterine and ovarian cancer for starters.
Let's be fair and honest. This young lady should see a the doctor who started her on pills and discuss her weight gain. There are plenty of other choices.
