Birth Control - my patch fell off

Expert: Drea Jean H. - 5/31/2006

Question
Drea Jean -

I have been on birth control for about 10 years now. When my husband and I decided to get married we also decided to wait until the wedding to have sex. So I quit using my patch. (no sense in it!) I started up with my patch in Feb. as we got married in March. This past week we went camping. I'm not sure what happened, but the patch is gone. Maybe it happened in the lake, or showers, but the point is it was gone. I had to wait to get home to apply a new patch. I'm not positive how many days I went without, but I believe it was 3-4 days. I also know it all happened during/around my ovulation time. Is there a pregnancy possibility in there? If so, shouldn't the chances be dampened by the fact that I have worn a patch the correct way for the past 3 1/2 months? Maybe? Kinda hoping....

Answer
Hi Phaedra,

Your risk is small, but yes there is one. Now, you have alot going for you, that you had been on the birth control for many years, that can sometimes decrease fertility, and then for the prior 3 months. Also, your patch may not have been gone as long as you think.

Like I said, small risk. Test if your period is late, but I think it should be ok.

Thanks,

Drea Jean
