BlackBerry and BES - Blackberry 8100 as a modem?

Expert: Steve Thompson - 1/27/2008

Question
Hello, I'm wondering if there's any way for me to use my blackberry 8100 Pearl as a modem for my PC or Mac. Specifically, I do not want to use the EDGE or GPRS service provided by Rogers, but rather use voice minutes and a dial-up ISP. The reason for this is that my data plan restricts my access to the BIS (can be used for personal email only), and thus my account is blocked from sending or receiving any other data.

On my PC I created a new connection in the Windows "network connections" folder using the blackberry as a modem, and my ISP's info. It correctly dials using my blackberry and sounds like it's working (making the typical dial up ISP beeps and noises) until I get an error message: "777: The connection attempt failed because the modem (or other connecting device) on the remote computer is out of order." I do not think that this is a problem with the ISP because I connect fine using a phone line.
The hardware/software I'm using is an IBM Thinkpad R40 running WinXP SP2, and the USB cable / Blackberry Desktop Manager. My carrier is Rogers wireless, if it makes a difference.

Thanks in Advance,
Charlie

Answer
Sorry, you can't get it to work like that. Well, you can but you'd need to write a driver. RIM only writes a driver that allows you to use the BB as a GPRS/EDGE modem. What you'd need is a driver that takes the analog signal from your ISP and converts it to a digital signal. Not an easy task - one may exist but I can't find one.
