Question My bluebird has stopped sitting on her eggs.....we had 3 or 4 days in the 90's......could there be something wrong with the eggs?
Answer Eggs are abandoned at times and we often do not know why. From the start of incubation Bluebird eggs should hatch in 12 to 14 days depending on the weather. Hot weather can cause abandonment but this usually happens late in a hot summer. In hot weather now the female does not have to incubate as much as the eggs will stay warm. This is what you may be seeing, or if she was incubating more than the 14 days she may realize that the eggs are infertile, which is rare as the female even in a committed relationship usually sneaks off to mate with other males to broaden the gene pool. As I said, we often just don't know. Send your mailing address to walshaw1@cox.net and I will send you a free 20 page Bluebird book that will make you an expert.
