Subject: abandoned eggs

Question
I have 4 eggs in the bluebird house, (3rd batch this summer). It seems they have abandoned the eggs. It has been close to two weeks and I have only seen them return once to check on the eggs., unless it was a different pair. What should I do? It has been very hot and humid. Thanks, Amanda

Answer
Hi Amanda. This is not unusual at the end of the season and in hot weather. You don't say where you live, but here in NE OK many of my birds are on their third and probably last family of the year. It may be the weather or a predator may have gotten the female. (they have a lot of predators). Earlier in the year I wait at least two weeks with no activity and then remove the nest and eggs. This late in the season it would probably not make much difference, but you may wish to do this to possibly get another pair. If you don't already have my free 20 page Bluebird book please send your mailing address to walshaw1@cox.net - pay special attention to page 19 about spreading your wings a bit.
