Bluebirds/Bird in my Bluebird House

Question
The past three nights in a row, there has been a bird in my vacant bluebird house (last bluebird nestlings left 6/27/11)& the house was cleaned out and sanitized. I think it may be a juvenile woodpecker. He has come each evening around 7:30 pm (I live in central NY state) and peers out of the hole. Next morning he is gone and then back again in the evening. What is he/she doing??  Very odd. I am curious.
Thank you.

Answer
That is a very normal situation. It is a Downy Woodpecker, and they often do this in the fall and even more often in the wintr. They rarely nest, just use it as a safe and warm place.
