Question
who wrote "sweet home chicago"?

Answer
Hello Don,

Sweet Home Chicago was first performed by Robert Johnson around 1936. The song is an adaptation of "Kokomo Blues" by Scrapper Blackwell, (about 1928). The "Chicago" related lyrics are by Johnson. Johnson's original lyrics and arrangement are different than later versions that Clapton (or Blues Brothers) performs. So, if you go by the ruling that, for example, "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" was written by Anne Bredon, and only arranged by Jimmy Page (Led Zepplin I, 1969), then you attribute Sweet Home Chicago to Scrapper Blackwell, arranged by Johnson. However, I suggest the lyrics are just different enough to credit "Sweet Home Chicago" to BOTH Johnson and Blackwell. I'll be interested in hearing other people's opinions regarding this. Thank you, I hope this answers your question! Regards, George Armstrong
