Board Games/Looking for an old football board game
Expert: Don - 4/4/2011
QuestionQUESTION: Hello,
When I was a boy we had an football board game which I'm looking for. It consisted of a cardboard field with raised sides to mimic a stadium. Slots for cards. Offensive and defensive cards for both teams. I believe it also had Kickoff and punt cards. Each team would draw 4 cards per down series.
Game play example was something like this: you're on offense and you drew and decided to play "pass for 10 yards". The defense player drew/plays a "stop a run for a 5 yard loss". The result is the defense called the wrong play to stop the pass and the offence moves down the field 10 yards for a 1st down....
Any idea what this game was called and where I could find one?
ANSWER: Hi Troy,
Thanks for your interesting football game question. I believe you are referring to NFL Pro Foto-Football game by Cadaco. You can copy and paste this link into your browser to see a picture and contents description:

If this is correct let me know and I will look into finding a copy for you.

QUESTION: Thanks Don for getting back to me so quickly. Well, it's close, but the game I'm talking about didn't involve transparencies. The cards were plain colored cards (non-coated red and green if I recall). You laid the card down next to the other players and flipped them over to see if what the result of you guess was.
ANSWER: Hi Troy,
I'm surprised that you have given up with our quest to find the name of your game. You can reach me by phone through my website, so we can look into more details. There are other things we can do. I hope to hear from you.
Best regards,
Don
Hi Troy,
Thanks for your quick response as well. Since I don't know what years you were a boy and the approximate year of publishing for this game, I would suggest using this link to a page at the Boardgamegeek and hopefully seeing a picture of the cover will help you. Here is the link:

Let me know what you found out.

QUESTION: OK Don, here's what one of my brothers had to say (sound kind of what I said, but from a different perspective):
The game comes with the football field, Two sets of playing cards. One deck, (red in color I think), of the cards are offensive plays ie. (pass for 5 yard gain. The other deck, (green) had defensive plays ie. Incomplete pass or intercepted & returned for 35 yards. There seemed to be two little figures or footballs that you used to mark your position on the field of play. There were also a few cards we would flip over on a play that stated there was a penalty on the play (ie. 10 yard penalty) The rules seemed to be that you flipped a coin to see who started on offense, You had 4 downs to make a first down( four flips of the cards) if you made a first down each player drew four new cards- offense & defense respectively. You moved your man or ball on each down as to what the outcome of what the offensive players card said verses what the defensive players card stated. I can remember cards that stated something about the punting & kick returns also but not sure if they were different in color and were only used sparingly. I do remember that if you were on offense and it was first down, you would take your 4 cards and decide which card you wanted to play first and then set it face down on the field, The dude on defense also looked at his four cards and tried to pick the right type of defensive play to stop yours. Ie he had to have defensive pass play to stop your card if you had picked a pass play yourself, if he had figured a defensive run play and yours was a pass play your card trumps and you move your figure the amount of yards dictated on that play card.
The field seemed to have some kind of score board on it. Anyway that’s what I remember about it other than one last thing.
I KICKED YOUR BUTT EVERYTIME WE PLAYED AND I WAS CONSIDERED A PRE-MARTY MORNINGWIG-OF THE LIONS
AnswerHi Troy,
Thanks for explaining your brother's detailed perspective of this game, including a football and a couple of figures. Previously you mentioned a cardboard field with raised sides mimicking a stadium. Additional information about the physical properties of the game (e.g., approximate field size; scoreboard size or its position in the game; box color and dimensions; cover designs, pictures, etc.) would be helpful in my blind search. Since you are unsure about publishing year, the years you played this game would provide a starting point. I have found that talking with my business customers has been quite effective in teasing out the unique details of a specific game. Please use the information in this link to contact me:

I would be happy to assist you in your quest.
Thanks for your persistence and best regards,
