Boat Repair/Mid Section Removal

Question
Hi,

I have a pivot/swivel tube which has come apart and needs repair. I need to take the mid section out, but do not know the exact procedure to take this apart? Can someone take me through the process, and also let me know the best way to prevent snapping bolts, or running into hassles?

Motor is a 1980 175 Johnson. It is a short leg.

I have worked plenty on car motors (Full motor rebuilds..), but have yet to conquer the old 2str Outboard.

Is it best to work the motor on the boat? Or take it off and lie it down and work on it?

Thanks

Answer
What you will be attempting to do will not be an easy job. I would highly recommend getting an OEM service manual.
You can work on it on the boat, HOWEVER, you will need to pull the powerhead, lower unit and adapter plate to get to the swivel bracket and upper and lower motor mounts.
You will need the proper lifting equipment, engine hoist and lifting eye.
As for how to remove bolts, there isn't any way to teach someone how to remove fasteners in a few paragraph post. Use lots of penetrating oil, you may need to use a torch as well, and impact guns and drivers.
It is a hard, involved job.
