Question
Do you know how many rpms a 1987 35hp force outboard motor has and were would be the best place to find a tach. I was told to test the rpm because the boat wont plane out runs good but very slow the boat is a 16ft. renegade fiberglass any other ideas are welcomed thanks.

Answer
Chris, yes you should have a tach, but it isn't absolutely necessary. If the boat won't plane out you have a different problem than how many rpm's the engine is turning unless the prop is bad.
If you seem to have an engine that will turn up but doesn't go anywhere have the prop's hub checked.
If it just doesn't seem to accelerate or you hit a flat spot, have the engine tested to find the real problem. For the price of a tach you could have the engine properly diagnosed.
