Boat Repair/Steering Cable Replacement

Question
Jeff,
I posted previously about the steering replacement on my 1986 Stratos. I was mistaken on the model it is a 365V with 115 Johnson. The current steering system is a Teleflex back mount rack system.

Trying to determine if I should attempt or have it done.

Questions:

Is it required to lift and move the motor for removal and de install?

Is there a standard length for this type of boat.

Any tips or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks
Dan

Answer
The cable will have a length stamped into the cable either near the helm or output, engine, end. It will be expressed in feet or inches. You will need this number for the proper cable.
If you can remove the cable from the engine's tilt tube without removing the engine then no the engine does not have to be removed. If the cable interferes with the motor well area of the boat, then the engine will need to be removed.
If you remove the engine upon re-installation use 3M 5200 as a sealant around the mounting bolts.
When installing the new cable tie a 1/4" line to the old cable and pull it from the helm side. Use the line to pull the new cable through the boat. make sure nothing is attached to the steering cable with wire tys before removing the cable. It can be a difficult job on some boats.
