Boat Repair/oil sensor shutdown

Question
I have a 1997 175hp Johnson outboard. After running the motor hard for less than 3-5 minutes the motor will cut back to slow rpm and begin to miss. the water pressure reads good, no overheating and the oil flow seems ok.

Answer
Are there any alarms? Your engine may be going into a "protect mode". It can be triggered from the oil injection system, overheating or over reving the engine. Some motors also have a vacuum fuel flow sensor that tells when adequate fuel is not getting to the engine.
You will need to diagnose each sensor and system one at a time. You will need the OEM service manual for this, or take the boat to a good, competent service center.
If it isn't the sensors or the above it could be a failure in the ignition system. Here again it will need a good check out, not something for the home mechanic.
Post back if you need further help.
