Question
I'm trying to diagnose the problem with my '73 johnson 40HP. It has good spark and compression. Also the fuel pump and lines have no restrictions at least until the carb. So, i'm assuming it is the carburator. Should I just get a rebuild kit? How do I know which kit? Ive seen so many carb kits for '73 40HP Johnsons. Also, what does the kit involve and how difficult is it, i.e. how long will it take? Around how much do you think a marine shop would charge to do the job? Thanks for your problem

Answer
has the engine been sitting for a while??? if so sounds like the carb needs to be cleaned..  a standard carb kit for that model should be used.. you wil have to take the carb off and dissasemble it and clean all parts reinstall and set the idel jet on the top of carb at one and a half turns from all the way in, to get it to start then with it running adj the jet to give you the best idle..

A shop should be able to do it in one hour and about 20 to 25 for the kit...
