Boat Repair - outboard steering

Question
QUESTION: I recently purchased a 4.75 quintrex bayhunter with a 60HP mariner outboard.  the motor is only 4 years old.  while the trim and tilrt work fine and it starts first time, the steering appears jammed.  i am reluctant to force it for fera of breaking someinthing.  its not hydraulic. the stainless rod just seems like it is siezed.  I was wondering if you could advise me(hopefully its not a silly thing like a lock position for travelling that i have overlooked) although i don't think they have such a mechanism that stops the motor turning.  thankyou so much for your help

Regards

Frank

ANSWER: what has happened is the sterring shaft the stainless one that goes thru the engine is rusted to the tilt tube....there are stainless tubes available and it will never happen again...

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: thanks for that.  in order to free this one up, would some application of a product like INOX ar another lubricant work if i squirted it in around the shaft, disconnected the motor to the arm then gentle tapped the end of the shaft.  or do you have any other suggestions as to how i would free it up.

thanks again

Regards

Frank

Answer
any thing is worth a shot...sometimes if it is not too frozen you can use a chisle to hut the shaft towards the outside.. have someone hold tunsion on the wheel at the same time...kepp spraying it with liquid wrench or somehtig like that..if that doesn;t work then you have to replace the tube and cable..
