Question
The tilt motor won't shut off.  I have to shut the batteries off to stop it from running.  Any suggestions on what might be wrong?

Answer
Tom. One of two things could be happening.  First thing to look for is a stuck tilt trim solenoid.  What happens is the plates inside the solenoids weld themselves together and remain on.  You didn't say if the motor was running up or down.  If it is running up, the solenoid with the blue wires going into it is bad.  If it is running down, the solenoid with the green wires is bad.  Check those first.  If that doesn't work, the only other thing that could be going on is a tilt and trim wire has gone bad and worn threw.  The only way that could happen is if two wires have rubbed together long enough to bare the wire.  Or something else has worn the coating off of the wire.  I have also seen screws stuck threw wires shorting them out.

Expertise

Basic boat motor mechanics or boat wiring. I can help the most on mercruisers, merc outboards, and johnson evinrude outboards.

Experience

Mercruiser tech. Started working on boat motors three years ago. I have limited shop time under my belt but have proven myself in our shop and am now the shop manager.

Organizations
I have a mercury tech number and a yamaha tech number if you would like, but i don't think that being a certified tech makes you a good diagnostic pro.

Education/Credentials
Three years of see and learn shop time. Two weeks of tech training at Mercuiser school at Springfield. Two update merc schools at Topeka KS. "gotta love George". Tons of "E" skills classes online. Most of my ability to diagnose came from shop time working out problems.
