Question
23' whaler w/ 2001 225 optimax xxl (225 hrs) On plane running above 4000 rpm I noticed water coming out of the cowl where the control cables route to the engine.  I stopped and took the bucket off but could not see anything obvious at sea.  Further inspection on the hose uncovered what appeared to be a leaking idle bypass valve on starboard engine block.  What could cause this item to fail other than age?  I am capable of fixing the faulty part but now I have submerged a portion of the wiring harness, injectors etc. in salty brine.  Any recommendations on proper remediation aside from replacing everything that got wet?  Engine runs great and all operating parameters are within specs.

Answer
You can rinse the parts off with fresh water and soap then use an anti-corrosion spray. There are a number of "salt removing" products on the market, go by your local marine supply store and talk to them.
Pull everything apart and clean very well with a nylon and brass brush, then use a final spray of Corrosion Guard, which is made by Mercury.
