Boat Repair/Got Reverse throttle?

Question
I have a 1987 70hp Johnson outboard. Last year when I launch my boat, reverse does not kick in until it's on full throttle. It gives a jerk when it kicks in, like it takes a minute to kick into gear. Is that an easy fix? Something I need to asjust on the cable? Your feedback is greatly appreciated in advance...

Answer
The cable probably just needs adjusted.  Take the hood off of the motor and have someone shift the motor while you look at where the cable is moving on the motor.  You are going to need to adjust the cable to push the shifter farther in reverse.  It will make more sense when you look at it.  You can test the shift adjustment by turning the prop.  In neutral it should spin freely, in gear, forward or reverse, it should lock into gear one way and you shouldn't be able to spin the prop one way.  Don't adjust it too far, and be shure that you are locking into gear each way, and have free spinning neutral.

Expertise

Basic boat motor mechanics or boat wiring. I can help the most on mercruisers, merc outboards, and johnson evinrude outboards.

Experience

Mercruiser tech. Started working on boat motors three years ago. I have limited shop time under my belt but have proven myself in our shop and am now the shop manager.

Organizations
I have a mercury tech number and a yamaha tech number if you would like, but i don't think that being a certified tech makes you a good diagnostic pro.

Education/Credentials
Three years of see and learn shop time. Two weeks of tech training at Mercuiser school at Springfield. Two update merc schools at Topeka KS. "gotta love George". Tons of "E" skills classes online. Most of my ability to diagnose came from shop time working out problems.
