Boat Repair/Transom Repair

Question
I have a 1986 Searay Sundancer that I am in the process of having the transom and motor stringers replaced since they are both rotted.  The  guy that is doing the repair elected to not use marine grade plywood.  When I asked about it, his responded by saying that the same glue used in marine plywood is essentially the same as the glue used in the plywood that is bought at Home Depot or Lowes.  Also he is using one 3/4" piece across the entire area of the transom and will be doubling it around the outdrive only.  Does all of this sound right?  The guy has a lot of experience and a very good reputation.  Any input would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Answer
It may sound fishy, but he is right.  Regular pressure treated plywood or even well sealed regular plywood will work just fine.  He is also correct in using two pieces that are glued together at the outdrive as long as he is doubling a big enough piece to spread the load.  I know it sounds like it is thrown together and cheap, but he is doing exactly what he should.  I hope everything works out, sounds like a HUGE project.

Expertise

Basic boat motor mechanics or boat wiring. I can help the most on mercruisers, merc outboards, and johnson evinrude outboards.

Experience

Mercruiser tech. Started working on boat motors three years ago. I have limited shop time under my belt but have proven myself in our shop and am now the shop manager.

Organizations
I have a mercury tech number and a yamaha tech number if you would like, but i don't think that being a certified tech makes you a good diagnostic pro.

Education/Credentials
Three years of see and learn shop time. Two weeks of tech training at Mercuiser school at Springfield. Two update merc schools at Topeka KS. "gotta love George". Tons of "E" skills classes online. Most of my ability to diagnose came from shop time working out problems.
