Question
I have a Haines Hunter v19c with a 115 Mercury. The steering is stiff and i want to lubricate the cable.I am having trouble removing the assembly from the motor bracket.Could you tell me where i could find a generic cable steering diagram so that i can see what i am doing. Also any hints on doing this job would be helpful.regards Stewart

Answer
The removal of the cable will depend on how much room you have in the motor well area.
Disconnect the drag link from the output end of the steering cable (the long bar from the cable to the engine). Now disconnect the large nut on the starboard side of the engine where the cable goes into the tilt tube.
Now if you have enough room pull the cable out of the tilt tube, make sure the steering is turned to the left. Clean inside the tilt tube with a small round wire brush and some carb cleaner. Dry inside when clean. Clean the steering cable from any old grease. If the cable is out of the tilt tub turn the steering to the right and clean the exposed inner cable. Once clean regrease with a waterproof grease.
Place the cable back inside the tilt tube with plenty of grease on the output end and reconnect the steering link arm.
Thats all there is to it.
