Boat Repair/fuel usage

Question
Hi Jeff
I have a Johnson 140 about a 1984 model and it seems to use far more fuel than it should or used too.
How do I go about tuning the motor to use optimal fuel. currently a small trip about 10 km will use almost 2x tote tanks (44l)

Answer
Les, you got me with the metrics. The 140 was not a very fuel efficient engine, not bad but not good either. It was built when gas was cheap and plentiful.
Your best bet is to make sure the engine is up to par. Good compression and a full tune up. Check your lower unit and prop that they are in good condition as well. Nicks, and bent blades on the prop will hurt fuel economy. You may want to try a stainless steel prop as they preform better at lower rpm.
Check the boat bottom. Make sure it is straight, no growth or rough surfaces, like from badly done repairs. Hook or rocker in the bottom could also hurt the fuel economy.
Check inside the boat. Are you carrying too much weight? Extra equipment or not needed gear can hurt economy.
Hope this helps.
Jeff
