Boat Repair/no water coming out...

Question
I have a 1973 evinrude 65hp, model# 65373r, I just replaced the empeller on it, and I followed all the instructions in my manual, and I had a leak on the middle gasket of the exhaust manifold which I have repaired.  There is still no water coming out of the exhaust ports on the back of the motor, and the exhaust doesn't seem to be forcing itself out. I would think you could hold your hand about 12" away and still feel the exhaust, but right now, to feel it you have to put your hand about 3" away. I'm not sure where I've gone wrong.  It should probably be noted that I bought the boat, and it was probably sitting for over a year before it was run.  PLEASE HELP!!!

Answer
When you put the gear case back on the motor, it is possible to "miss" the water tube.  If the water tube didn't line up you won't get any water up to the engine.  Second thing to try is take out the thermostat and start the engine with the thermostat out of it.  If it is pumping water, water will shoot out of the thermostat.  That will tell you that you are getting water that far.

Expertise

Basic boat motor mechanics or boat wiring. I can help the most on mercruisers, merc outboards, and johnson evinrude outboards.

Experience

Mercruiser tech. Started working on boat motors three years ago. I have limited shop time under my belt but have proven myself in our shop and am now the shop manager.

Organizations
I have a mercury tech number and a yamaha tech number if you would like, but i don't think that being a certified tech makes you a good diagnostic pro.

Education/Credentials
Three years of see and learn shop time. Two weeks of tech training at Mercuiser school at Springfield. Two update merc schools at Topeka KS. "gotta love George". Tons of "E" skills classes online. Most of my ability to diagnose came from shop time working out problems.
