Question
The motor will start but dies as soon as you release the key from the "start" to the "on" position.  I have replaced the ignition switch but it seems to lose spark to the engine as soon as the key is released.  I already had the starter replaced when I held it too long in the start position.

Answer
Hi Fred,

i understand you have changed the starter already? Things that you should look at:

The clutch - it might be slipping when you return the key to the "on" position.

Wear or corrosion on the starter shaft - preventing the gear from engaging.

Check the battery and connections - If it hasn't been charged it's flat or the connections are poor.

Do you follow a schedule of maintenance? Is the engine cleaned and serviced? If not you may find the problem lies in accumulated dirt causing the clutch to slip when you switch the key back. Also examine the starter shaft, it may be cause of the cut out.

I hope you find this helpful. Having gone through the above, let me know how you get on.

Regards

Chris
