Boat Repair/Larson 180 SEI Power Steering Problem

Question
Hi. I have a 2004 Larson 180 SEI with 3.0 Volvo-Penta engine and Volvo-Penta SX and have a power steering Problem. When driving the boat under 2000 RPM it is very difficult to drive without constantly over steering. I replaced the helm and cable, however did not help. At 1500 RPM I observed the steering rack while turning the steering wheel to keep the boat in a straight line and it appears as though the rack is is binding. When trying to drive the boat in a straight line the rack makes a 'rubbing' noise which resonates to the helm. No leaks on the rack seals and the power steering fluid is at the proper level. I removed the steering cable and can freely move the outdrive. It appears as though the power steering pump is not producing adequate hydraulic pressure under 2000 RPM. Does it sound like the pressure valve in the power steering pump is bad or stuck?

Any ideas?

Answer
Bob,

Possibly the trim tab needs adjustment. Keep the distribution of boatload, make sure the bottom is clean.

Now using your service manual find the trim tab. It may beon the lower engine leg covered by a cup. Loosen the bolt. Adjustment should be very small increments. This should fix the problem.
