Question
QUESTION: I just bought a mercury 150hp xr4 (3carbs). It's been sitting up for about a
year.  When I put it in the water it ran great but I stump the gas, it bogged
down and took about 30 seconds to get on top. I changed the fuel filter,
spark plugs. Where do you think I should begin?

ANSWER: if the bulb stays firm, then when it is dogging down hit the choke and see if it helps.. if it does, pull diss clean and reassemble carbs with new kits....make sure to clean all passages....

QUESTION: Tryed what u said, the bulb worked fine, the choke made it die. Still bogging
down. I looked over the motor at the launch ¬iced that a spark plug wire
has a small cut in it ( enough to shock). But it not arcing out on anything. Got
home , cleaned carb, fuel pump and made sure the spark plugs are firing. (
all fired good , even the one with the cut in it ). The fuel pump is pumping
good, the carbs are clean, the plugs are firing good. I took it out again, AND
THE SAME THING,it just doesn't want to get on top. What could be the
promblem? I'm running out of ideas. Any advice would be helpful !

Answer
check the staror...it has a high side and a low side...maybe the high side is defective....you can test the stator with a ohm meter and a peak voltage meter....around 80 on the low side and up to 280 ac volts on the high side....with an ohm meter...check for shorts to ground.on both sides....
