Boat Repair - steering cable

Expert: Everett Peacock - 1/22/2009

Question
Hi, I have an 87 Lavey Craft w/ 200 hp merc outboard.  steering cables SHOT!  looked at it tonight to see about doing myself.  removed two bolts that seem to be the end of the cable that attach to bracket that steers the engine.  loosened two large nuts at end of sheathed cable on other side of the motor, thinking the cables might pull free at this time, but no go.  Do I need to use a drift and start hitting the ends where I removed the two smaller blots to push the cable through the threaded housing?  It would probably help me to see new parts to figure out exactly how this setup works, but havent bought yet cause I dont know length to buy.  Thanks

Answer
the steering cable nut should be at the end of the tilt tube, that is the piece that the cable goes thru...the cables are froxen to the tilt tube...you need to pull the engine and replace the tilt tube and cable..or cables...There is a stainless steel tilt tube available,  if you replace it with a factory one it will freeze up again, but with the stainless it won't..
