Boat Repair - OMC upper unit question

Expert: Everett Peacock - 10/19/2009

Question
Hi sir, I thought I was checking the upper unit gear oil and there is a screw on the left side of case surrounded by rubber. I was trying to unscrew this and it caved into the housing. Water began coming out. Is this a water drain plug/freeze plug? The screw and whatever is attached to it from inside wont come out througn the opening. I attached an image I found showing the screw. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Answer
there is no upper drive oil and lower drive oil..it is together and checked by the screw on top of the drive...the one you pulled is a freeze plug...the only way to replace it is to split the two halves apart and replace the screw and the c-clip is on the inside....if you can find something maybe a rubber plug to fill it it will work....
